A Guide to Installing House Shutters

If you have two good hands and know how to use an electric drill you can install your own house shutters.  If you would rather have someone else do the job, you can pay a carpenter to install your new shutters for you.  However, installing house shutters is relatively easy and can be performed by many people.

Do not be intimidated by the prospect of installing your own house shutters.  If your neighbors can accomplish this easy job, so can you.  You only need to get acquainted with a few simple procedures.  There are two standard ways to install your shutters.  You can decide on an inside mount or an outside mount.  It is easiest to perform an inside mount which can be accomplished right from your open window.

Inside mount installation

When you perform an inside mount installation, the shutter is connected directly to the inside of the window casing on the window jamb.  This is normally a simpler manner of installation and is much preferred by professionals as it is neater and does not require any framing strips.

The window jamb should be solid.  Then, you need to attach the shutter hardware with screws.  This will require drilling a hole through the jamb at the appropriate areas so that the unit can be attached into the window jamb.  The jamb has to be solid so that the screws will be secure.

Now that you have mounted the hardware, you should check to ensure that the shutters are straight with the window.  You might use a level to insure that they are aligned. Be sure to read the enclosed literature as each type of inside mounted shutter requires different mounting procedures.  If you understand how to use an electric drill, you will be able to easily accomplish an inside mount for your shutters.

Outside mount installation

Understandably, an outside mount mounts on the outside of the window, usually into the trim, but occasionally in the wall.  If you wish to use an outside mount on shutters inside your house, make sure that you do not screw the unit into the wall panel unless it is anchored for the reason that the unit will simply come out of the wall.  Some people prefer an outside mount because you can be less than perfect as regards the measurements, unlike with an inside mount. However, the outside mount does not look as finished as the inside mount.

Make sure you use your level when installing house shutters to make sure that your shutters are straight.  Your eyes can play tricks on you, but a level will not.  You will want to have an electric drill, a drive socket and the right apexes, as well as molly bolts if you are installing into drywall without a stud.

Do not be afraid to install your house shutters yourself.  This is not too complicated and when you have installed one piece, the rest will be easy to do.  All you need are the required tools, namely, a screwdriver, drill, toggle mounts (if installing into drywall) and a level, you will be able to do this job easily and within a short period of time.
