No Child Left Behind Takes The Failing Grade!

From 2002, the Federal government, through Action of Congress, enacted the controversial No Child Left Behind Act(NCLB) . This system was planned to improve the primary and secondary school student’s knowledge, primarily in the areas of English as well as math. While this is an admirable objective, the construct of the system has failed to bring the sought after gains. Most educators have laid the blame on the method laid out in the No Child Left Behind plan. With its concentration squarely on English and math, pupils, teachers and administrators face a task which imposes punishments if the aims are not achieved.

These punishments use the type of rescinded Federal money, which creates a catch- 22 kind of problem. Even the funding which is appropriated has not been acquired by the states. This has been standard procedure since the inception of No Child Left Behind. In 2002, approximately$ 4. 2 billion dollars which was appropriated in no way reached the states. In 2007, this financing gap grew to an astonishing$ 14 billion dollars! To add to the monetary woes of the school districts, states all over the nation were suffering budget shortfalls in revenues, due to the state of the general market.

This key fact led to several states finding it necessary to make budget cuts in several areas, which includes, you guessed it, education! Despite the fact that schools are expected to administer standard tests in English and also math, the tests protocol of No Child Left Behind does not extend to other courses. Some schools were compelled to drop other subjects from their curriculums if they were to maintain the Federal funding. This doesn’t seem like a wholesome overhaul of our educational program.
