The Advantages of Open Source Software
As incredible as it sounds, there are businesses and foundations out there that actively create and distribute software for free. The reason for them doing this depends on company to company, but the benefits to the customers is incredible.
Way back in the 1970′s, computer enthusiasts and nerds would programme software and syndicate it to other hobbyists for free to try and make it better. Along came a man called Bill Gates who saw a money making opportunity in building software for computers and built Altair BASIC. Unfortunately for him, his software was also passed around and he ended up writing a long letter pointing out why software should not be free (try Googling Bill Gates Open Letter).
Recently, the open source community has been gaining a large foothold in the software market, mostly driven by developing nations who can’t afford the licensing fees of commercial software like Windows, Word, Dreamweaver and even Programming Languages.
There are free versions of just about everything, from operating systems to computer applications. The open source concept has even hit the food and drink market with open source recipes for wine and beer now free on the Web. I am actually typing this short article on a piece of open source software called Open Office, a free substitute to MS Word, and it’s running on Ubuntu, an open source substitute to Windows or Mac OS X.
When it comes to websites, there is a wide range of open source software around to power any kind of site. Web development companies such as WordPress and Wikimedia Foundation release solutions free for businesses to use. What makes it particularly effective is that open source customization can be completed by lots of companies around the world.
Utilizing open source software for your site sets up a great base from which to start, for example WordPress is fantastic for virtually any kind of website, but with a bit of WordPress customization you can have it meet your exact specifications for half of the cost of developing it from scratch.
Before you purchase your next software, always check to find out if there is an open source option on the market. Especially during these hard times, open source products may be one way you or your business can drive down its costs.
